Mothers Smoke Less around Their Children after Counseling :: Essays Papers
Mothers Smoke Less around Their Children after Counseling In Melbourne F. Hovellââ¬â¢s article: ââ¬Å"Effect of Counseling Mothers on their Childrenââ¬â¢s Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke: Randomized Controlled Trial,â⬠the author persuades the reader effectively through showing evidence about the dangers of second hand smoke. He also introduces the effectiveness that counseling has on mothers who smoke in front of their children. The article presents a study of the effectiveness of counseling for smoking mothers, and shows the decline of children's exposure to smoke in their environment. The article states many valid points, and backs the evidence with statistics to insure that the reader is persuaded by the articleââ¬â¢s points. The article begins by introducing the problem of second hand smoke to children, and has a delayed thesis which states his main point about the effectiveness of therapy. The author then explains the methods and who participates. Many statements backed up with evidence co ntinue throughout the article. The article also shares individual stories of mothers who have gone through this type of therapy and how it has helped them. Hovellââ¬â¢s article was believable because it included statistics as well as success stories. His research is also believable because he displays it with credibility and logic, and he appeals to the readerââ¬â¢s values. There are numerous reasons as to why smoking should be banned around small children, specifically in the United States. Hovell addresses these reasons with statistics. The World Health Organization estimated that half of the worldââ¬â¢s children are in danger due to second hand tobacco smoke (1). In the United States, 43% or about 15 million children live in homes polluted with tobacco (1). This is a higher percentage compared to other countries across the globe. Many of these children will suffer from asthma, repertory tract infections, otitis media, and sudden infant death syndrome (for fetuses whose motherââ¬â¢s smoke) because of their exposure. The article states that counseling tends to decrease childrenââ¬â¢s exposure and motherââ¬â¢s smoking while increasing the number of quitters (1). The study done for this article involved recruiting of certain mothers and families who would undergo the counseling process.

Shiloh Essay -- essays research papers
The Second Battle of Shiloh à à à à à The switch to college life can definitely change people. In high school, one makes friends that will hopefully last a lifetime. Then comes senior year, and after all the college admissions letters have been received, one must face the realization that his/her best friends will not be by their side 24 hours a day / 7 days a week any longer. Still ecstatic by what this new life, college, holds for them, students enter into their chosen institute of higher learning. Do you remember that first break, or long weekend, that brings everyone back to the place where they grew up? Its a chance to look back and catch up on old times, even though youââ¬â¢ve only been separated for a month or two. Whether coming home from UGA, Tech, or even some out-of-state college, that drive home gives one time to reflect. Will my friends who I graduated with be the same friends who I know and love? Like I said, college alters people, and the first time you see old friends, you might realize that your best friends are not who they once were. Although painful, this is a process that is natural. Friends change, and friends move on with their lives, regardless of your presence. On a larger scale, this is the dilemma brought to the readers attention by Bobbie Ann Mason, author of ââ¬Å"Shilohâ⬠. à à à à à In Masonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Shilohâ⬠, Leroy and Norma Jean Moffitt are a married couple living in Paducah, Kentucky. Leroy has spent the past 15 years driving a tractor-trailer across the country. Four months ago, Leroy was involved in a highway accident that required steel pins to be placed in his hip. He returned home to rest and rehabilitate his leg. He is confined to his house, something that he hasnââ¬â¢t seen for an extended period since heââ¬â¢s been on the road. Like a college student, this is Leroyââ¬â¢s long weekend. Leroy comes home to his wife, Norma Jean, hoping that she will be the same person he left many years before. Unfortunately for Leroy, Norma Jean has moved on with her life, much like friends who move on after high school graduation. Leroy would like for things to be the way they were, but Norma Jean has chosen a different course in her life that doesnââ¬â¢t involve Leroy. She works at the Rexall Drug Store, loves to play music, and is taking classes in composition at Paducah Community College. Bobbie A... ...se. Leroy knows that something has to be done to save his marriage. Mabel, Leroyââ¬â¢s mother-in-law, suggests they take a trip to Shiloh, a Civil War battleground. This is ready-made symbolism. A battling couple takes a trip to a famous battleground. Looking for a place to picnic, they sit down next to a cemetery for Union Soldiers, which symbolizes the death of their life together as husband and wife. She tells Leroy that she is leaving him and when she walks toward the bluff overlooking the Tennessee River, Leroy tries to follow. His good leg, however is asleep, and his bad leg still hurts him. This symbolizes that he will never catch her. She has her own life and he is stuck in the same place. à à à à à In conclusion, I have personally experienced the loss of a friend after we both embarked on different paths. Although we were the best of friends in high school, when the time came on that long weekend to hang out, we didnââ¬â¢t even pick up the phone to see what the other was doing. Although its natural to move in different directions, it still hurts to no longer have that friend in your life any longer, just like it hurts Leroy not to have Norma Jean

Of Mice and Men: An Unexpected Connection
Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife come across as very different characters. They differ greatly in appearance, mentality, and personality. Despite their differences, though, Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are surprisingly similar in the way they both constantly need to create physical connections. As a result, they are able to relate to each other, and when they are finally alone together they address each otherââ¬â¢s needs, which leads to a tragic end. Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are extremely different people, both externally and internally. Lennie is ââ¬Å"a huge man, shapeless of face, â⬠¦with wide, sloping shoulders,â⬠(2) while Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is a very ââ¬Å"purtyâ⬠(28) woman with ââ¬Å"full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyesâ⬠(31). Lennie has animalistic qualities and moves clumsily: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his pawsâ⬠(2). Contrastingly, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is more graceful and moves very quietly, which is depicted when Candy says, ââ¬Å"Jesus Christ, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife can move quietâ⬠(82) after she had entered the stable on the way to Crooksââ¬â¢ bunk without anyone hearing her. Lennie suffers from an unknown mental illness ââ¬â the other characters think heââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"nutsâ⬠(74)ââ¬â and as a result, he acts callow, imitating the behavior of certain animals: He drank from the pool ââ¬Å"with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse,â⬠(3) and he ââ¬Å"dabbled his big paw in the water and wiggled his fingers so the water arose in little splashesâ⬠(3). Lennie is ââ¬Å"a nice fellaâ⬠(40) who is very innocent, illustrated by how he interacts with the girl in the red dress in Weed: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦he reaches out to feel this red dress, â⬠¦he jusââ¬â¢ wanted to touch that dressâ⬠(42). He is also very tractable; ââ¬Å"â⬠¦heââ¬â¢d do any damn thingâ⬠(40) that George told him. In contrast, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is mentally sharper and very observant; she notices all ââ¬Å"them bruisesâ⬠(80) on Lennieââ¬â¢s face, which resulted from his fight with Curley, and realizes that he was the one who hurt Curleyââ¬â¢s hand, not a machine. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is also very assertive, manipulative, and flirtatious. A clever lady, she knows how to get what she wants. The superiority of Curleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s qualities to those of Lennie later contributes to their tragic end. Both Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife have to constantly create physical connections in their lives, but each for a different reason. Lennie has an obsession with petting soft things, which he reveals to Curleyââ¬â¢s wife: ââ¬Å"I like to pet nice things with my fingers, sofââ¬â¢ thingsâ⬠(90). His obsession, which he has had since he was a child ââ¬â his Aunt Clara used to give him a piece of velvet to touch ââ¬â is depicted throughout the book. In the beginning of the book, Lennie finds a dead mouse and when asked why he keeps it, he answers, ââ¬Å"I could pet it with my thumb wile we walked along,â⬠(6) expressing his desire to pet things, dead or alive. He wants to pet things so badly that after George throws the mouse off into the distance to get rid of it, Lennie goes and retrieves it again. In Weed, when Lennie saw the girl in the red dress who he had never even met before, he reached out to touch it, just to feel the dress. George describes Lennieââ¬â¢s obsession concerning Slimââ¬â¢s pups: ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢ll want to sleep right out in the barn with ââ¬Ëem. Weââ¬â¢ll have trouble keepinââ¬â¢ him from getting right in the box with them pupsâ⬠(38). Lennie ââ¬Å"wants to pet them pups all the timeâ⬠(42). Furthermore, his dream to tend ââ¬Å"furryâ⬠(16) rabbits results from his obsession. Lennie has a longing to pet every soft thing he encounters in the book and each time he fulfills his craving something unfortunate happens, foreshadowing the bookââ¬â¢s final events. He doesnââ¬â¢t know his own strength and canââ¬â¢t control his obsession. Similarly, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife has a constant need to physically feel loved. She is someone who needs a lot of love and attention (her dream was to be an actress), which her husband will never give her. As a result, she tries to interact with any guy she can; in Crooksââ¬â¢ room when talking to Candy, Crooks, and Lennie, she admits, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦what am I doin? Standinââ¬â¢ here talkinââ¬â¢ to a bunch of bindle stiffsâ⬠¦anââ¬â¢ likinââ¬â¢ it because they ainââ¬â¢t nobody elseâ⬠(78). Slim comments on her behavior: ââ¬Å"She ainââ¬â¢t concealinââ¬â¢ nothingâ⬠¦ She got the eye goinââ¬â¢ all the time on everybodyâ⬠¦ Seems like she canââ¬â¢t keep away from guysâ⬠(51). Although many of the ranchers view her as a ââ¬Å"tart,â⬠(28) I believe that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is a genuinely lonely person. She expresses her loneliness to Lennie: ââ¬Å"I get lonelyâ⬠¦ You can talk to people, but I canââ¬â¢t talk to nobody but Curleyâ⬠(87). Ironically, Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, who have nearly opposite qualities, can cater to each otherââ¬â¢s need by responding to each otherââ¬â¢s obsessions. Purposely kept apart by the author through various characters for most of the book, when Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are alone together for the first time, the already existent chemistry between them is ostensible, and the extent of their needs is so great that neither can resist acting upon them. Leading up to this final scene, Lennieââ¬â¢s attraction to Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is unequivocal. When he first sees her, his eyes ââ¬Å"[move] down over her body,â⬠(31) and when she talks Lennie watches her with fascination. Furthermore when George speaks negatively about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, Lennie ââ¬Å"defensivelyâ⬠says, ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s purtyâ⬠and then later repeats, ââ¬Å"Gosh, she was purtyâ⬠after which he smiles ââ¬Å"admiringlyâ⬠(32). Curleyââ¬â¢s wife knows how to relate to Lennie and speak to him on his level. After Candy tells her that Curleyââ¬â¢s hand was caught in a machine, she, knowing what really happened, speaks flirtatiously to Lennie: ââ¬Å"O. K. , Machine. Iââ¬â¢ll talk to you later. I like machinesâ⬠(80). In the final scene, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife indicates to Lennie that she understands his obsession; when Lennie reveals that he likes to pet things, she responds ââ¬Å"Well, who donââ¬â¢t?â⬠¦ Everââ¬â¢body likes that. I like to feel silk anââ¬â¢ velvet. Do you like to feel velvet? â⬠(90). Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife open up to each other, and as a result the reader learns the most about these characters from this scene; Lennie explains his obsession, while Curleyââ¬â¢s wife explains her loneliness and need to feel loved. The reciprocal connection between them is so strong that Lennie disobeys Georgeââ¬â¢s orders, risking his dream of tending the rabbits, and succumbs to the temptation of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. Her loneliness is so great that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, aware of the consequences, ââ¬Å"[takes] Lennieââ¬â¢s hand and [puts] it on her headâ⬠(90). Lennieââ¬â¢s obsession overpowers him, and he continuously strokes Curleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s hair harder and harder, making her scream in pain. Afraid that George ââ¬Å"ainââ¬â¢t gonna let [him] tend no rabbits,â⬠(91) when Curleyââ¬â¢s wife doesnââ¬â¢t stop screaming, Lennie shakes her while covering her mouth and accidentally kills her. Lennieââ¬â¢s actions illustrate his lack of self-restraint, and he is therefore viewed as a threat to society. As a result, Lennieââ¬â¢s killing of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife leads to the killing of Lennie. The characters that seem the least alike in Of Mice and Men, Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, ironically, share a common need that enables them to have one of the strongest connections in the book, both physically and emotionally. Knowing that they have the ability to satisfy each otherââ¬â¢s needs, Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are in a very vulnerable situation that is full of temptation. Lennie canââ¬â¢t control his obsession and accidentally kills Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, while trying to preserve his dream to tend rabbits that is based on his obsession. The physical connections that once gave them pleasure and happiness in life lead to each of their deaths.

Self-Awareness Through Dis-Closure, Feedback and Reflection.
Throughout this assignment I shall discuss how I have developed my self-awareness through dis-closure, feedback and reflection. ââ¬Å"Being self-aware enables us to identify our strengths and also those areas that can be developedâ⬠(R Ashmore & D Banks 2000 p47), self-awareness is continually being developed through the reflection of our life experiences.Reflection of my life experiences has given me the opportunity to become more aware of my strengths and weaknesses through being honest and the use of disclosure firstly to myself and then to others. The Gibbs Reflective Cycle 1998 is a useful model for reflecting on a life experience to gain further self-awareness through evaluation and analysis to finally having an action plan identifying what would be done differently in the future. The more knowledge we have about ourselves, the easier it becomes to relate to othersâ⬠(R Ashmore & D Banks 2000 p47), the self-concept (Murphy 1947, Argyle 1969, Burns 1980) enables us to learn more of our self through self-image, self-esteem and the self-ideal, by reflecting on each of these three parts in regard of myself I have determined that I see myself as being confident with a high self-esteem which I find makes me a friendly and approachable person however I have also realised that I have to listen more to receive feedback. When we try to see and feel the world from another personââ¬â¢s perspective, we are trying to be empathic. If we are successful, we will not just be able to understand the persons thoughts but also feel something of what they feelâ⬠(G Firth, R Berry, C Irvine 2010 p148) within my past career path of working with people with learning disabilities with an inability to communicate it has enabled me to develop my empathy and consideration for others, which is not to be confused with sympathy but is more of a connection towards somebody elseââ¬â¢s feelings.By developing my connection to other peopleââ¬â¢s feelings who are unabl e to communicate verbally it has enabled me to develop non verbal cues as described in Eganââ¬â¢s model 1998, such as adopting an open posture with a relaxed and unhurried appearance and the importance of eye contact, however within my new career role now working with people of which most can communicate verbally I need to stay aware that the use of non-verbal cues and the tone of the voice used is still of upmost importance. Self-disclosure, a process by which we let ourselves be known to othersâ⬠(R Ashmore & D Banks 2000 p48) the Johari window can be applied to increase self-awareness and focuses on the theory that being more self-aware is of great assistance in developing as an individual, within the framework of the Johari window the subject of self-disclosure is of great importance. The Johari window is composed of four parts, the open self, blind self, hidden self and the unknown self, through the use of disclosure, by sharing information from your hidden self to other s the open self increases in size and in return for disclosing information feedback is received from others, giving insight into your blind self therefore increasing your self-awareness. Appropriate disclosure avoids the two extremes and means that it is fitting, suitable, the right amount at the right timeâ⬠(Egan 1990 p45), it is important to ensure the correct amount of disclosure is made so that the relationship is not put at risk. Through disclosing too little information it does not allow for the reduction of uncertainty and also doesnââ¬â¢t allow for the build up of trust in a relationship, yet on the other hand if too much is disclosed to soon it may cause a feeling of pressure to recipertate. Self-disclosure between the nurse and patient occurs as part of the developing therapeutic relationship, where both must determine jointly what, when, where and how if at all they will disclose themselvesâ⬠(R Ashmore & D Banks 2000 p 49) I have come to realise that no two relationships are the same and progress at different time scales depending on the individual and can also be determined by several variables such as age, status, gender or personality. Ultimately the use of disclosure in a therapeutic relationship is to gain trust and encourage reciprocity. Students may consciously chose to give little personal information to patients whom they perceive as ââ¬Ëriskyââ¬â¢ and likely to abuse the self-disclosureâ⬠(R Ashmore & D Banks 2000 p55) within my current workplace it is policy not to disclose personal information to the people we provide care for which can hinder the progression of a therapeutic relationship, however as I am unable to disclose my hidden self in reflection this has made me more aware of that the use of non verbal communication and the tone of my voice towards the people I provide support for helps to build trust, although on the other hand on reflection of feedback I have received it is apparent that if I have not c ommunicated effectively due to personal issues it can affect the way others feel and reduce the trust within the relationship. ââ¬Å"Conveniently others are constantly giving you the very feedback you need to increase self-awarenessâ⬠(J A Devito 2004 p33) to receive and further develop from the feedback received we have to be active and effective listeners. Related article: Secondary Reflection ExampleListening is a skill that can be thought of as effortless and undemanding however many people fail to listen to each other actively and are often either non or partial listening, whilst doing this we may pick up on partial bits of feedback but are not receiving the entirety. On refection the skill of listening is something I need to further develop as I can often find myself not actively listening to a person I am communicating with which is hindering the development of my self-awareness. In conclusion the growth of self-awareness is continually progressing over time and is never complete ââ¬Å"becoming self-aware is an on going process that is never complete. Therefore, self-evaluation needs to be undertaken at regular intervalsâ⬠(R Ashmore & D Banks 2000 p 50), evaluation of ourselves through reflection and the feedback we receive from others is a task which should be completed frequently to enable us to recognise both our positive and negative areas and ultimately becoming more self-aware giving us the means to manage the demands of both work and personal lives. Management proposal
Abstract The present paper is based on a case study of Top Travel. Inconsistent manager practices in selecting travel clerks and trainees are described. Furthermore, the paper includes a section in which a relevant strategy to improve the selection process is recommended. A job description for the position of a HR manager is included. Finally, the paper focuses on a person specification for this management position. Introduction This paper is based on a case study of Top Travel, with focus on inconsistent practices in the selection of travel clerks and trainees. It has been reported that store managers have made mistakes while recruiting potential employees. Therefore, a specific strategy is outlined to improve the selection process. Other aspects discussed in the paper include a job description for the position of a HR manager and a person specification for this position. Inconsistent Success in Selecting Travel Clerks and Trainees One of the likely reasons why Top Travelââ¬â¢s store managers are not consistently successful in selecting suitable travel clerks and trainees is that managers failed to give candidates prior notice and areas to research and focus on. As a result, store managers were unsuccessful in focusing on important aspects, such as accurate determination of candidatesââ¬â¢ skills and information on corporate culture and the job position (Mathis and Jackson, 2010). Another reason for the inconsistent success in selecting travel clerks and trainees refers to the lack of formal interview training of store managers. The organisation has not emphasised strategic planning into improving the interviewing process. There was not a sufficient plan of interviewing that had been created in advance. In addition, store managers failed to assess culture fit of candidates within the company (Patterson et al., 2011). The inconsistency of employee selection at Top Travel could be also explained with the fa ct that managers extensively focused on job skills and experience rather than evaluation of candidatesââ¬â¢ personality. The ability to differentiate critical job skills was not consistently present during the employee selection process at Top Travel. A Strategy for Improving the Selection Process Based on the issues that have been identified, it is important to recommend a strategy for improving the selection process, for both travel clerks and trainees. Giving candidates prior notice and areas to research is essential because it enables store managers with an opportunity to focus on relevant aspects of the selection process (Mathis and Jackson, 2010). One of the most important issues is to determine candidatesââ¬â¢ fit within Top Travelââ¬â¢s culture. Managers should provide an adequate description of the company, including background information, tendencies and trends pertaining to its corporate culture as well as expectations of the job position (Patterson et al., 2011). The organisation should consider the use of competent and qualified interviewers who understand the specificity and structure of the interviewing process. Interviewers should meet in advance and prepare a relevant plan to follow during the interview. It is recommended to assign different responsibilities to different professionals (Brewster et al., 2011). For instance, one person would be responsible for specific types of questions asked during the interview, while another person would be in charge of assessing of candidatesââ¬â¢ credentials. Even though store managers at Top Travel have declared their accurate instinct at spotting the right people, there should be emphasis on the evaluation of applicantsââ¬â¢ personality. The company needs diverse individuals with diverse personalities to deal with the evolving needs of travel customers (Patterson et al., 2011). Managers should also focus on differentiating one candidate from another. The consistent use of testing and discussi on is a relevant part of the strategy to differentiate the critical job skills that managers expect to see in candidates. Finally, it is important to take the time in creating a small candidate pool with several individuals who meet the needs of Top Travel (Brewster et al., 2011). It may be necessary to reopen the search for employees in case the right people with adequate skills and experience are not settled. Job Description for HR Manager The position of a HR manager requires that the manager should develop policy and regularly participate in the adequate coordination of human resources processes in the organisation. Important responsibilities of a HR manager include employment issues, compensation, maintaining labour relations, benefits, providing employee training opportunities and services (Bareham, 2012). One of the essential duties of a HR manager is to analyse salary trends in the company as well as determine competitive compensation plans. This professional is directly responsible for the creation of suitable policy within the organisation, with focus on ensuring equal employment opportunities and employee benefits (Cushway, 2008). Different policies, regulations and reporting mechanisms should be maintained properly in order to ensure adequate compliance with standards in the field. In addition, a HR manager is expected to evaluate industry trends that could help the organisation grow in the future (Patterson et al., 2011). Furthermore, a HR manager screens and recruits employees when there is a need to fill vacant positions in the organisation (Cushway, 2008). New employee orientation is adequately planned by the manager in an attempt to ensure positive attitude towards the companyââ¬â¢s culture and goals. A HR manager should complete reports and recommend procedures that could lead to the decrease or elimination of absenteeism and turnover in the organisation (Bareham, 2012). This professional is also responsible for contracting with outside suppliers to provide appropriate employee services and relocation services. A Person Specification for the HR Position The HR position includes key competencies, such as degree or equivalent, evidence of professional development, extensive contribution to organisational change, experience in delivering reliable HR practices, and experience in developing HR policies (Brewster et al., 2011). Having a professional qualification in the field along with evidence of professional development is a necessary component of screening candidatesââ¬â¢ education and training capacity. Focus on organisational change is important considering the fast pace in which modern organisations develop (Bareham, 2012). In addition, a HR manager should demonstrate an extensive experience in the HR field, which would serve as a strong basis for developing successful practices in the organisation. Conclusion The paper discussed inconsistencies in the employee selection process at Top Travel. Store managers demonstrated practices that did not lead to the selection of the right people. Therefore, the paper included important sections on recommending a strategy to improve the selection process along with details on a job description for the position of a HR manager and a person specification for this position.
